I didnt post my story at first because I was tired; I
just wanted to sleep. :-)
The materials I used were IPExpert and NMC. If you
can only use 1 resource, I would go with NMC. The
Spotting the Issues pdf that comes with each lab
was an amazing help. They also have a much better web
site then IPExpert (labs online, answer keys, walk
through, all on pdf.) Last I checked, NMC also cost
less and you got more.
As far as the actual lab goes, I am a 4-time loser, 1
time winner. I never really studied, only about 1
hour a day, manly because I was lazy. I took my first
two attempts in March and May of 2004, got close, but
not close enough. I didnt know the DocCD. I took a
few months off, then started studying in September and
took the exam in November. Got really close. This is
when I decided to stop studying, I went in on Dec 22
cold, and got a 75 (79 after the re-grade). I
scheduled another exam for 02-14-05. The only studying
I did was reading over NMC Spotting the Issues, and
was completely burned out. I went out drinking all
weekend, inspired by Marylands spectacular
performance over Duke (Go Terps!!!). I actually went
into the exam hung over Monday morning. (I seriously
do not doing recommend that)
Tips: The exam is not hard, the key? KNOW THE DOC CD.
And I dont mean be familiar with it; I mean know it
like the back of your hand. Inside out, front and
back. There were about 10 questions that left me
clueless, but I knew were everything was on the DocCD
and was able to look it up. I had to do things on
Monday that I had never heard of.
Speed had never been my problem; I was usually done
the exam by lunchtime, and spent the second half the
day looking up things I didnt know. Besides the
DocCD, I did know routing and switching really well. I
do a lot of EIGRP and OSPF at my job, so I was able
through the first half the exam rather quickly, and
spend the rest of the day looking up things I didnt
know.
After the exam, write down the score for each section,
that way you can use the score report to calculate
your exact score. Very helpful.
Dont sweat the small stuff. Dont worry about that
obscure QoS feature, spend your time hammering down
the basics, use the DocCD for everything else.
In short: Know the baiscs, and know the DocCD.
