 Catalyst 6500, CatOS 8.3.(4)

I recently had some issues with slow responding Netapp appliances. According to Netapp flowcontrol needs to be applied to the switch interface.

set port flowcontrol 11/48 send on
set port flowcontrol 11/48 recieve on

Question: I know this has something to do with buffers and sending pause frames, but when do I know when this is needed other than calling the NIC manufacturer of the attached device? Looked up commands on Cisco website but failed to get any technical insight. Thanks
