RE: ISDN - Dialer Map IP

Vijay,

It actually depends on the version. Some older IOS versions
would not allow the BRI interface to accept or initiate a call without
the "dialer-group" command applied to the interface. Even if there was
no dialer-list defined it was still required. In the current releases
this is not the case. As for the "dialer map" statement, it depends
what encapsulation you are using.

For HDLC encapsulation you must issue the dialer map statement
on a multipoint ISDN interface (main interface or dialer rotary group).
For PPP encapsulation it's not required on the receiving side of a
multipoint interface, as a dynamic mapping can be formed during IPCP
negotiation. This is not to say that you are not using a dialer map.
If you issue the "show dialer map" command you will see that in fact
layer 3 to layer 2 resolution is still there, but it is simply dynamic.

There are other situations that can affect the necessity for
dialer map statements, such as PPP callback or hub-and-spoke ISDN.
