Thanks guys for your time. I've just tried the config again, it will work if the switch is trunking with another switch, otherwise you MUST assign an interface to the vlan, and that interface has to be UP/UP, for the vlan to be up/up as well.

I had two interfaces connected to another 3550 and they were auto-trunking.
