Greetings Charles,
Actually Slots 5, 6, 12, & 13 are the high speed slots.
Slot 11 is for 'Common Control Cards', (CCC's); same as slots 7 thru
11.
CCC's can be TCC/TCC+/TCC2, XC/XCVT/XC10G, and AIC/AIC-1
(AIC is the optional Alarm Interface Controller, currently recommended
for the slot 9 (center))
Usually you'll find slots 7 and 11 mirror each other, as do slots 8 and
10, with 9 for the AIC, if present.
The 454's shelf assembly slots have symbols to help you along,
different color shapes and what not...
The E-series, G-series, and ML blades are referred to as Multi-speed
cards and generally go in slots 1-4, 14-17
Don't forget about the power requirements - DC rectifiers can be
elusive; No AC power plugs here :)
CTC is usually what you'll use for management.
This is done via Java/GUI web browser with Java 2 Runtime Environment.
I am running V1.3.1_13 with good results to manage my 454's;
I have found YMMV with other versions, I've had issues with 1.4.x,
etc...
BTW - the LCD panel on the '454 won't do much aside from assign an IP.
Try and stay away from TL1 - the less you know about this the better
IMHPO;
If you never heard of it before forget I ever mentioned it :)
Silver lining = The ML blades now run IOS for L2/L3, however the
console port is not the standard Cisco RJ45 rolled serial cable, rather
an RJ11 on the blade side so be prepared should you need to manage ML
blades...
These blades are commonly used for Gig drop-off's from a (SONET?)
ring.
Feel free to contact me offline if you have any further ?'s.
HTH,
~M
