FREEK is used when your SP doesn't have end-to-end LMI. If it's not a TRUE
frame relay network, then the concept of "active" vs. "inactive" loses it's
real functionality. You may see things being active when they really are
not.
That's where FREEK helps out. Most SP's these days will re-encapsulate into
MPLS, IP, something else inside their own network, only displaying FR on the
edges.
So the router doesn't really "grab" anything, it just polls the other router
itself, not relying on what the FR switch is saying about active/inactive.
HTH,
Scott

May I just add that LMI is only local significant and FREEK (love that term
too!) is regarding the whole PVC. Sometimes I've been asked to implement it
on the MGX (both ends), but not often. Just wondering what additional info
does the router grabs when having FREEK? And why customer wants it? I
think most of time its on an ABRFST (available-bit-rate with foresight
capability) PVCs, is it just additional feature of congestion avoidance?
btw, I just joined not long ago; just want to thank Scott for all the
comments, I have learnt a lot from it.
