Well, maybe I should have said that it's not necessary to do the labs, but
that it can't hurt to do them. Ultimately I found that good theoretical
preparation and the Internetwork Expert labs were enough.

The diagrams that come with almost any major lab book, be it Internetwork
Expert, IPExpert, Netmasterclass, etc., are for the most part well-drawn, in
color, and designed to be readable. (Heck, they better be given what you pay
for those books.) I found the diagrams in the real lab to be harder to read.
The Duggan book being written by a CCIE content-developer has diagrams much
closer to the real thing, so if you don't do the labs in that book, at least
shell out fifty bucks to buy it and study the diagrams.
