Carl,
If the interface on the 3550 is in dynamic desirable mode
(default) it will interpret the router's DLSw+ STP BPDUs as an attempt
to negotiate trunking. Issue the "show interface status" command on the
3550 and see what the operational mode of the interface is. If it is
misnegotiated as trunk issue the "switchport mode access" command on the
interface.
