I agree /w Scott. I am somewhat interested in the SAN certification (or even preparation/training). As a matter of fact, there was a problem last week
/w a SAN network..I kept trying to figure out simple source and destination..to troubleshoot. I looked up the Cisco implementation
of the SAN technology..and ran into this "fibre-channel" technology. I couldn't do anything for him (well
not in that instant...it was some sort of fibre channel Port Adapter on a Cisco 7000 series router. The field service guy on site
was sure it was physical, and not anything we could fix. Field Services ended up fixing the problem /w a Hardware/SAN guy on the line,
every since then I have been interested....it is not hard as I thought. Although...when I saw that fc-tunnel back then, I had a deer in the headlights
look on my face (so did the other IE's around me...)

heheheh... That has been discussed before! Is there a market first, or a certification? ;)
In any event, whenever pursuing ANY certification, it would be advised to make some sense out of the need for it (personally) versus the costs involved. But on the other hand, SAN stuff is indeed an emerging market, and to some people/companies, it is a very important and very detailed technology.
I would not consider multiple/separate CCIE tracks to be "one single certification" though. Each is COMPLETELY different. It's a single vendor's certification track, and if that vendor is the only one that you/your company supports, then it may make sense in that fashion. If you are independent though, I would follow your logic of diversifying. Everyone has different needs though!

You might disagree but all these new tracks, unless you are really into the training/certification market or your employee really needs this level of expertise in that specific area they look to me more like a marketing strategy than a technical neccesity.
For the job market I think it might have some sense if Cisco start to give some real advantages for the companies that have Triple,Quad, etc CCIEs. and for us I think we have to start look into the whole picture. Might be better get a Linux/Unix, Microsoft, CISSP,Juniper, etc certification so we can be more flexible than put all of money/effort into one single certification.

That, most definitely, is the hard part! A lot of it is just stuff I've done in the past that I keep up with. There has been a nice progression to the certs and things I do throughout my sordid little career. ;) Many of the things we learn are building blocks for something else. Which makes the things not quite so drastically separate from each other!
But it is still difficult to find all the time. I've found that giving up sleep helps. :) And let me tell you, network designs done under sleep deprivation are MUCH more interesting! (Warning, don't try that at home!)

Well, yeah, the variety of recerts may become a pain! :)
But that's why I limit it to things that are good for my marketing! Nortel doesn't do much for me... I administer their PBXs, but there's no cert for that. Besides, I don't do it often enough any more to care either! Just becomes part of the vast collection of useless knowledge!
Besides, I only have SO much room to have equipment around! ;)

Might as well add the Nortel stuff while your at it.....
I havent got the time to do one CCIE track, never mind 5...
and just think of all those recerts once you pass....
I think I'll go back to to sweeping the streets, at least it's one broom and
I have two hands!

With the way Juniper's stock is looking the Juniper cert's look pretty good deal. I think I may go for one of the lower-level ones just to get some juniper knowledge in there. Cant hurt I suppose. The JNCIE is about as hard as the CCIE I'm assuming so I'll not be trying for that one anytime soon!
