Larry Metzger <larrymetzger@sbcglobal.net> wrote:Good evening everyone,
Just wanted to drop a note and say I passed on my first attempt at San
Jose on Friday (10/15/04). It has been a truly exciting and challenging
road to achieve this accomplishment.

I'd like to thank many people for assisting me in this journey. First,
I'd like to thank the family. My wife Myrna and three daughters (Paige,
Kristen, and Tiffani) have spent a great deal of time waiting for me at
the dinner table and holding up movies so that I could type just one
more line of code. They have really been there for me and allowed me to
succeed. I'd like to thank a few friends that loaned me ATM equipment
and Voice equipment (Kevin Matteson and Joe Menezes). Without this
equipment I could never have properly prepared. I'd like to thank
IPexpert for a great lab manual (a little over the top on the latter
labs, but full of great material). THANKS TO EVERYONE ON THIS LIST. I
have answered some people's questions here and asked a few of my own.
Often I found myself rationalizing the answer to posts and then going
back to my own studies. This really helped me with solidifying my
knowledge. It was like having someone there with flash cards all the
time. I'd like to thank the other CCIEs that have stayed in touch with
the list to provide feedback for those still on the journey. Scott,
Brian and Brian, Chuck (etc...too many to list) have been great with
their input. I hope I can continue to participate and offer assistance
to those that follow. And most important, God. I have had faith and
prayed for guidance. God watches over me and assists me everyday in all
of my life.

Now, for the success story. Study, study and more study. I passed the
written a few years back and never had the time to prepare for the lab.
In April I decided to go at it again and started preparing for the
written. I borrowed some gear, bought some gear and began work. With
hundreds of hours at the keyboard and hundreds of hours at the books
(IPexpert, Net Master website, Cisco Press, IE sample lab (didn't buy
the book because my lab equipment wouldn't fit - looks like a real
winner though)). I would say that having a home lab gave me the best
opportunity to prepare. I could get on the gear at any hour of day or
night and leave configs running to do other things later. Again, I
would recommend checking into borrowing if you have friends with some
gear. Definitely the core is the thing to know. Having experience with
setting up the peripheral stuff helps, but you don't have to be able to
do it cold you can use the documentation. The Cisco Press book is great
for labs that get you into the CISCO mode. Do the vendor labs for
getting the full gamut of questions. You'll never see all the stuff on
one lab (like IPexpert 39 & 40) but you will most likely see these
pieces somewhere in the real thing. Get the experience and go for it.
