I think it might be more a matter of how you are asked to configure the
phone setup.
If you are asked to ensure a dot1q trunk is setup, then setup the trunk
and native vlan to the data port.
However, if you are not asked to setup as a dot1q trunk, I would just
setup the voice vlan and access vlan and let the phone figure the rest
out.
I've done it both ways with the phone/ccm setup and there doesn't appear
to be much difference.

When configuring 3550 for 7960, is it necessary to configure the trunk
and making data vlan native ? Would I get points deducted on LAB if I
only configure both Voice and data VLAN , with switchport as access for
Data vlan and dynamic for voice trunk ?
