Frame Relay Backbone question

Sorry about this slightly off topic question but I was wondering how
frame switches connect PVC's across country on the backbone?

I know that T1's and T3's usually aggregate into an STS-1 electrical
signal and get carried across a SONET backbone if this distance between
endpoints is far enough.

Do Frame-Relay switches (4ESS) somehow backend into the carriers SONET
ring or is the Frame-Relay network a separate backbone between the
telcos?
