I once played with this and found that OSPF allows you to connect two
different areas with the same area ID to different ABRs of a zero area
without having them joined.
One problem is if you are summarizing on an ABR and the other area contains
more specific routes. So the issue is that you lose the inherent advantages
of having one area advertising an aggregate.
If I remember well across area 0 a GRE tunnel will do the job but not the
virtual link.
