I know this has been discussed a number of different time....
The specific piece you are talking about (join/leave specificity) is only
for sparse-mode. However, that's not the only function of "nbma-mode". The
hardware/queuing differential will work for ANY pim mode that happens to be
used.
So while the error messsage is a bit misleading, the rewrite of it you offer
below is equally misleading.

Matt,
The warning should really say "PIM nbma-mode will only be in affect
for sparse-mode groups". It's not that you can't run it in sparse-dense,
it's just that it only applies to sparse groups. The reason for this is
that it needs the explicit join messages that are inherent to sparse mode
pim.
