John,
I had a similar issue the other day. As I recall, when running 12.3 I
had to input the called number to the dialer map otherwise the IOS
wouldn't take it. However, with 12.2 I believe it would allow you to
input the dialer map for L2/L3 mappings without the called number.
Don't know if anyone else has had this experience...
My only resolution was to create dialer interfaces and use the dial
string command on one end but not the other.

hmm......i agree that the lack of interesting traffic will cause the
router
to not place a call, but i keep seeing examples of leaving off the
digits at
the end of the dialer-map statment as a way to stop the router from
placing
the call.....but it never works for me....seems to be that the number is
needed for resolution. i've triied it with ppp and w/ hdlc and it still
refuses to work (or i should be more specific - the interface comes up
but
neither side can ping each other and then the link goes down). i suppose
i'll just keep not using a dialer-l as a means of accomplishing this
task,
unless someone can give me a better idea.
