ISDN switch S0 ports

Hi,

can anybody tell me if routers are connected to an ISDN switch's
external or internal S0 ports?
My ISDN switch (an "Opencom 110" from DeTeWe) has RJ-45 adapters for the
external S0 ports and simple clamp adapters for the internal S0 ports.
In order to use the internal S0 ports I would have to cut open an RJ-45
cable and stick the 4 cables in the clamp adapters.
Is this necessary?
Using the external S0 ports, "show isdn status/debug isdn q921" tells me
that Layer 1 is down. Persistently.

Greetings,
Marcus
