I regularly install CW2K LMS for customers whose networks range from 100 to
1000 devices. There shouldn't be much difference for time needed between
SNMS and LMS, as the bulk of the work needed typically is getting all the
network devices to play nice with the NMS (harmonising SNMP communities,
debugging AAA on legacy gear, etc.) .
For a LMS install, if I know the network is in good shape and at least one
decisional admin will be dedicated to assist, I normally figure about 3
days for setup/integration, plus 3-4 days training. This assumes the
customer provides a fairly powerful server, setup with OS according to
specs. Network size matters actually fairly little until you hit the point
where you must do distributed installs, not a factor for you if you are
considering SNMS. If the network is disorganised, need to traverse multiple
firewalls under another group's jurisdiction, no TACACS/RADIUS, etc. I
will bid but on a hourly basis. Hunting passwords can be awfully time
consuming :)
In my experience CW2K installs invariably take a tangent into network
management best practices, network hardening, operational procedures
advice -- lots of interesting stuff that makes the 3-4 days' training
definitely not a luxury.
