What are the lights on the smartjack/demarc/HTU-R card/NTU/whatever you plug the t1 to?

Usually most smartjacks have HLOS (sig los) LOOP, etc, which can help verify most layer1 line issues.

Extended demarc (or dmarc) is when telco has to bring up the circuit all the way to floor X, room Z to hand off the circuit to you. This can come in variety of ways, dependent on your telco's way of doing it. Most of them (at least in Verizon land) will bring out the smartjack all the way to the room you request installation at. When you install extended demarc by the telco, then usually they are responsible for all line troubles until the smartjack, making it easier for you. If you install extended demarc yourself, it is most likely a long CAT5 or RJ48 line you installed yourself, running from the smartjack at the original demarc point, to your DTE equipment (e.g. CSU).

In case of my experience, verizon has a MUX in the building (their own rack, etc). Whenever its an extended demarc order, they bring out the outlet all the way to our room (for example, DS3 demarc would cause them to install a demarcation cabinet with coax ports on it; OC3 extended demarc had them install fiber patch box in the same room; not writing 'extended demarc' on the work order causes them to leave a patch cable connected to MUX and call it a day :P).
