Once the switch is configured for Voice VLANs (or switchport auxiliary vlan
on CatOS), the port will autonegotiate with any Cisco IP Phones that are
encountered on the configured ports. Using CDP messages, the phone will
advise the switch that it is a phone and will establish an 802.1Q trunk.
The Network facing port will act as a trunk; the internal port (for the
phone's functions) will be assigned to the Voice VLAN; the external PC
facing port will be assigned to the Native VLAN, or any configured data vlan
assignment. Packets forwarded to the Switch from the phone network
switchport will be tagged with the appropriate VLAN, as well as the
appropriate QOS settings, as they egress towards the network.
