Being thoroughly versed with the 3550 takes a good amount of time and
effort. However, configuring basic layer 2 connectivity which is required to
have any chance of passing the lab actually is fairly simple.

You have to know how to config vtp.
You have to know how to config vlans and place ports in vlans.
You have to know how to config etherchannels, especially at layer 2.
You have to know how to config trunks.
You have to know how to config routed interfaces - both physical and logical
(SVI's).

If you can do the above, and only the above, you'll be able to config your
IGP's and the other things in the lab. Of course, you'll lose points for
any other 3550 config tasks and maybe you'll lose points for some of the
above tasks if they're grouped with other tasks which you don't know how to
do. But, at least, you'll be able to get layer 2 connectivity which allows
you to proceed to the other parts of the lab.
