Actually, I was thinking about the situation where the interface on one
router might support a higher speed than the interface on the other router.
So, when I do a "clock rate ?" I might get a rate that's supported locally
but not supported because it's too high on the other interface.
But, for purposes of the lab, you're right, I don't need the highest speed
just something that works. And, if 128k is a sure bet, that's good enough
for me.
Thanks Ken

No problem Tim.
BTW, is there any reason you need the "fastest" speed as opposed to a
simply compatible speed? I just always default my clock rates to 64000
now and never have a problem on any boxes.
If your answer is to simply understand the capabilities of a particular
device and not strictly driven by practice lab studies, then I
understand. :)

Thanks Ken. It sounds like it might need to use trial and error to find
the
fastest speed. I was hoping there was a better way.

Tim,
It depends on the internal hardware. There are some speeds (e.g. 64000,
128000) that will always work.
I've noted that if you use the '?' feature (clock rate ?), sometimes
speeds show up, like 2000000, that I've had a problem using. I was told
it was because the internal controller couldn't clock that fast, but
nobody let the context sensitive help menu know that! :)

Subject: Basic serial link questions
Hi guys,
Here's the situation:
2 routers are connected via serial interfaces back to back.
I need to configure the DCE side with the clock rate command.
How do I figure out what speed to use with the clock rate command? Is
there
more than one speed that will work?
What determines which speed settings will work?
Thanks, Tim
