BTW, is there any reason you need the "fastest" speed as opposed to a
simply compatible speed? I just always default my clock rates to 64000
now and never have a problem on any boxes.
If your answer is to simply understand the capabilities of a particular
device and not strictly driven by practice lab studies, then I
understand. :)

It depends on the internal hardware. There are some speeds (e.g. 64000,
128000) that will always work.
I've noted that if you use the '?' feature (clock rate ?), sometimes
speeds show up, like 2000000, that I've had a problem using. I was told
it was because the internal controller couldn't clock that fast, but
nobody let the context sensitive help menu know that! :)
