Don't give in! You can do it!
That sounds like one of my lab attempts. I left there thinking I maybe
passed, or was at least close. I also had a lot of time at the end, and
checked everything twice.
After reviewing my scores on the web site that night, I calculated that I
got about 40%. As with you, I felt that there were several sections that I
scored 0% in that I thought was working.
With nobody to talk to, I ordered the entire Cisco IOS books config , (All
12 of them at the time) and sat down and read them all, cover to cover,
three times. (Note: nowadays what I would do is print out the stuff from the
web site, and put them in binders to read. Probably cheaper.) I would still
read them three times.
I spent almost three weeks doing this reading. Every single day I would read
something in the documentation and say "SH$$$T, that's what they wanted me
to do". I was living in a basement apartment at the time, and I was on very
good terms with my landlord. Each day, When they came home from work, I
would go up stairs and tell them what I learned. IIt got so bad by the
second week they started asking me how many points I had 'discovered' that
day.
By the time I finally got through (Five tries no less) I had figured out
enough of their questions to pass.
You have to know EXACTLY HOW the protocols work. You must know every detail
of the core protocols. You must think about how EVERY OTHER facet of the
network will affect what you are doing. If there is any topic, however
small, about a core protocol that you do not understand, you must practice
and research it until you are fully comfortable with it.
Don't take this as a failure for you. This is your first step towards
figuring out what you missed. I discovered that the areas I thought I knew
well, I really didn't know as well as I expected. I started questioning
every thing I knew about the protocols. Without breaking the NDA, I'll tell
you that my knowlege of RIP, supposedly the simplies of routing protocols,
was way below where it should have been.
Furthermore, allthough I may have understood how OSPF worked on say,
Ethernet, I completely misunderstood how it worked on ISDN.
All of these things were a revelation to me. But they foreced me to study to
really understand some of these protocols at a very fundamental level.
What knocks you off on the exam is this: If you understand 80% about a
protocol, you will score 0% in that section, because you get no partial
credit. If you understand 100% about a protocol, you will score 90%, cause
there is still something else you forgot. So study for the 100%.
Cheer up. Buy some more books, rent some more rack time and carry on. You
are not the first person with this problem, you won't be the last.
