Yash,
As one who has already taken the lab more times than I would like to admit,
I can tell you with great certainty that if you don't achieve full layer 2
connectivity, your chances of passing are slim to none. This doesn't mean
you have to know everything when it comes to configuring the Cat, ATM, F/R,
and ISDN, however, let's assume that you can't figure out how to configure
ATM so that you can ping the router on the other side of the ATM circuit.
In this case, you'll lose points, depending on your particular lab for IGP
routing, BGP, and maybe NAT and maybe voice. Again, depending on the
particular lab you have, this may amount to more or less than 20 points.
But, if it's less than 20 points, it's probably not alot less than 20 points
which would leave you precious little room for any other errors.
And, if you have a problem getting full layer 2 connectivity, you'll
probably encounter another problem - Time. Since layer 2 connectivity is so
critical to passing, you'll probably spend whatever time it takes to try to
get full layer 2 connectivity. If you're lucky and that doesn't take you to
much time, you might still have a chance of passing. However, in my sordid
lab experience, when I had a problem getting full layer 2 connectivity, I
then didn't have enough time to do everything else and check.
This then leads to still another problem - Panic.
If you figure you need to have all the IGP stuff finished by a certain time
and then you look up at the clock and see you're 2 hours behind schedule,
you start trying to rush. And, that starts causing you to make foolish
mistakes.
Having said all that, it's still possible that you can take the lab and pass
because it's possible that you won't be asked to do the particular things
such as PPPoverATM that you're weak on. However, those people designing
these labs seem to have an uncanny ability to find those topics one is weak
in.
So, here's my advice.
KNOW EVERYWAY OF CONFIGURING LAYER 2 PROTOCOLS NEEDED TO ACHIEVE
CONNECTIVITY. KNOW EVERYWAY SO WELL THAT YOU DON'T LOSE TIME CONFIGURING
THESE THINGS.
If you go into the lab being able to do the above, you've got a chance. If
not, you're pretty much doomed.
One other thing I suggest you keep in mind. Not passing the lab isn't the
end of the world. Life goes on. In fact, most people don't pass on their
first attempt. So, don't worry about whether you'll pass or not. If you do
great, if you don't, you can take the lab again in 30 days. And, taking the
lab is the best practice you can get for passing the lab. Even if you don't
pass, you get to see what you're up against. You'll see how tasks are
worded. You'll get a feel for how points are assigned and how the lab is
scored - all good things for preparing you for you're next attempt. The lab
is extremely hard - no doubt about it. But, it's not impossible. Thousands
have already passed and not all ccie are genuises. Some, perhaps most, are
normal, hard working people just like you and me. So, if they can do it, so
can you ( and me) if you're determined to do it.
HTH
