Thanks. Nothing to worry about then, since the ATM switch on the CCIE lab
would be configured correctly in case they would ask "Configure SVC without
using ILMI". They would need to give the NSAP addresses to be used on the
router for it to work.

As Carlos mentioned, without ILMI enabled, the switch would have to have the
NSAP addresses statically configured.

ILMI provides the uni autonegotiation and nsap address registration.

One thing that could be making the difference is the registration that
ilmi does on the switch (a 1010 I guess).
That is not strictly necesary, but on the lab setup is the way the 1010
knows about your addresses. If you don't enable ilmi, you would need to
tell the ATM switch where the NSAPs live for it to be able to deliver
the call.
