RE: Redistribution Headaches

What worked for me was doing 5 NMC scenarios. These are so complicated at
redistribution!! Have a look at scenario 4. This is my preferred one because
of the excellent explanation and good technique employed there. It is my main
reference for redistribution. But first you'll have to suffer until you
fully understand it !!

Tom Larus also has an excellent explanation about redistributing with TAGS.
If I remember well it is scenario 1.

After some struggle, I could come up with a strategy.

Make a draw with all the routing protocols. Then in your head, localise the
redistribution points. Then just imagine a routing update coming from a
particular routing domain going through all the routers and routing domains.
Once the update reaches (in your head) a redistribution point think like it
!! Will "I" prefer the update via OSPF or EIGRP or RIP ? Once you know what
the redistribution routers are going to do with the updates you will have to
apply/not apply the tools which are mainly:
--distance commands
--distribute-lists
--tags
--etc...

I found that most of the times, the "distance command" works in almost all
the scenarios !! This tool helps in having a router prefer some routes
coming from a particularr routing domain.

HTH,

--Richard

Note: Once you master what a redistribution router will do with the updates,
the rest will be easier, trust me. It will only be about applying your
preferred tools.

Subject: Redistribution Headaches

The most difficult problem in doing labs I find is multiple redistributions
on several routers. I have read all the usually books many times. I still
run into issues. I guess I am looking for an article on the strategy and
approach to redistribution.
