channel-group "non-silent"

When connecting two 3550 switches back-to-back in a channel-group, should the "non-silent" keyword be added to both sides of the channel-group? I've always had it work without adding this keyword, but if you don't need it when the other side understands PAGP, then what's the point of having a "non-silent" keyword?
