I am wondering about the implications of IPv6 for preparing for the CCIE
with 2500s. I have been hearing that folks need to migrate up from from
2500s because of new IOS features that simply are not available for 2500s,
and this sort of clinches it. It seems that to get IPv6 on a 2500, you need
to use a very high T train of IP Plus 12.2, which is likely to a lot of
other features a CCIE candidate might want to practice.

Which brings us to legacy 2600s, and it will cost a fortune to fit out 7 to
12 2600s with two serial interfaces each. Are there some problems with
flash and RAM limits on the old 2600s, so that we may run into IOS upgrade
problems with them.

If we end up having to buy a bunch of 2610XMs or 2611XMs, well, I think that
certainly creates even more demand for rental racks.

Of course, nothing stops us from using a lab of ultra-cheap 2500s to learn a
large percentage of what we need to know for the CCIE Lab, and then renting
rack time for the rest, but this means postponing practice with IPv6 to
later stages of CCIE preparation, along with ATM and voice over IP. The
percentage of material requiring more than 2500s is increasing to a point
where it may someday make more sense to spend a lot at the beginning.

What do you folks think?

Sincerely,
Tom Larus, CCIE #10,014
