Correct. The default mode is to try to autonegotiate a trunk on all ports through the use of DTP frames [switchport mode dynamic desirable]. Once the ports on both sides of the connection agree they will form a trunk, then the default is to negotiate the encapsulation method [switchport trunk encapsulation negotiate]. This negotiation process tries to connect with ISL first and will fallback to DOT1Q if ISL is not available.
 
That's the process, so to answer your question, yes, if you connect two 3550 switches together with default configurations, they will automatically form an ISL trunk.
