Since you are on a budget you should purchase one PIX 501 for about 300 to
400 dollars and be sure to get a copy of CCSP Self Study CSPFA by Behzad
Behtash. The book is almost written for someone without a PIX because of the
many labs. You will be able to do well with just a 501 and the book.
The major lab portion you will miss out on is the more complex VLAN and DMZ
scenarios however I personally was able to read through the book labs and I
felt comfortable with my knowledge after using just a 501 and the book.
The OSPF portion can still be configured with the 501 and you can use an IOS
router to gain understanding of OSPF just as long as you memorize the PIX
config and limitations around exam time.
Failover and the other functionality not in the 501 are not that big of a
deal to learn so you can simply use the book for this.
The above info is just for the CCSP. I am not studying for the CCIE yet but
I am pretty sure the cheapest way to have hands on PIX time with multiple
525+ devices is to rent lab time. I can think of many scenarios where the
limited interfaces on a 515 will not work out so I wouldn't splurge on a 515
or 520 because it will _not_ be as valuable down the road as you think.
Cheers,
Brad
