It's completely dependant upon the wording of the question...
Obviously, if it doesn't say that you can't use it, you are free to use
it, but in the sinister language of the lab, you'd better be absolutely
certain that none of the language even implies that you shouldn't use
it, or you'll end up losing the points.
The questions are deliberately vague, often only hinting that something
is either expected, or forbibben.
