Hi,

Without assosiating with a physocal i/c itself, SVI comes up, see my
config..
SFM(config)#vlan 45
SFM(config-vlan)#exit
SFM(config)#int vlan45
SFM(config-if)#ip address 3.3.3.3 255.255.255.0
SFM(config-if)#no sh
SFM(config-if)#^Z
SFM#sh
16:47:24: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by consoleint vlan45
Vlan45 is up, line protocol is up

Some other intersting things to note are, I have trunk links between SFM
and Down switches, as soon as I configured the above configuration,I
went to Down and checked,

Down#sh vlan id 45

VLAN Name Status Ports
---- -------------------------------- ---------
-------------------------------
45 VLAN0045 active Fa3/12, Fa3/48, Gi4/1
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<these are my 3 trunk links!!

VLAN Type SAID MTU Parent RingNo BridgeNo Stp BrdgMode Trans1
Trans2
---- ----- ---------- ----- ------ ------ -------- ---- -------- ------
------
45 enet 100045 1500 - - - - - 0
0

Remote SPAN VLAN
----------------
Disabled

Primary Secondary Type Ports
------- --------- -----------------
------------------------------------------

Down#sh run int f3/12
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 122 bytes
!
interface FastEthernet3/12
 no ip address
 switchport
 switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
 switchport mode trunk
end

Down#sh int tr

Port Mode Encapsulation Status Native vlan
Fa3/12 on 802.1q trunking 1
Fa3/48 on isl trunking 1
Gi4/1 on 802.1q trunking 1

The network is

SFM>>>>>>>>>>Down>>>>>>>>>Up

In SFM I have config ip address for vlan 45-3.3.3.3
In down vlan 45 is automatically created, since it is VTP client.I havent
config any IP in Down switch!
Also between SFM-Down-Up trunk links are there.
In Up I have configured ip address for vlan 45-here also vlan 45 created
bcoz it is vtp client.3.3.3.4
I can ping from Up to SFM.

Thanks
Mohamed.

Subject: 3550 - SVI's

Hi all,

According to the 3550 documentation,
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12119ea1/3550s
cg/swint.htm#1115763

an SVI doesn't become active until it is associated with a PHYSICAL
PORT.

Does a trunk qualify as a physical port?

Here's an example. Both SW1 & SW2 are runing RIP & both SVI's configured
as follows:

SW1 has int vlan 3, ip addr x.x.x.1/24 and Fa0/3 is in vlan 3 SW2 has
int vlan 3, ip addr x.x.x.2/24 but no Fa ports are explicitly assigned
to vlan, however, the trunk allows vlan 3 traffic. R3 has int E0, ip
addr x.x.x.3/24

R3 e0 -----------Fa 0/3 SW1 ---trunk----- SW2

So, can R3 ping SW2's int vlan 3 ?

I can't try this with the equipment I have.

Thanks in advance. Any feedback is highly appreciated. Tim
