Hong Kong YMCAs are very nice. You can get a single room, or stay cheap in
a dorm. There is one right next to the Peninsula Hotel, and another further
up in Kowloon at Yaumatei. There could be more YMCAs in HK, but that is a
start.
You could check out the guest houses located in Chungking mansions, near the
Peninsula Hotel. I liked the Rhine House. Some think the building is a fire
trap, so do not expect a nice looking building. When I stayed there, the
common areas like stairs were horrible, but the individual guest houses can
be very clean and comfortable. Plenty of places to eat near there, too.
Malaysian food, Indian food, etc. YUM!!
Here is a link to a page on this subject, with useful links:

The Rhine House, where I had a nice stay many years ago, is still there, and
mentioned in the ChungKing Mansions block A section "Also to be considered :
Rhine Guesthouse (2367 1991), 13F & 11F"
All this is in Kowloon, which may not be where the Lab is, but it is where
lots of cheap places are, and where I stayed cheap. Check out the general
link if you want to stay elsewhere in HK.

Best of luck!
