On a side note, many different workstations will accept IRDP announcements
if they happen.

As an added "bonus", put a sniffer on a Windows workstation sometime...
Even though it gets an address and gateway via DHCP, it will still send out
multiple queries to 224.0.0.2 (AllRouters). It's interesting behavior to
note.... So there may be some mechanisms in place even if there are no
active DHCP servers. Windows machines have done that even since before
their 169.254.x.x auto-addressing.

I think the clue here is that you've been told to config a DHCP server.
This way you can provide two default gateways from your dhcp server..
W2K will use the first unless it's down.
