Hey David,
Actually, this is one of the easier BGP features to understand. A simple
example will make this clear.
Assume you have 2 bgp routers, r1 and r2, that are ebgp peering.
R1 has a filter configured on it that drops a bunch of routes which R2 is
sending it. In other words, R2 uses up bandwidth sending routes to R1 it
doesn't want.
Now, suppose there were a way for R1 to tell R2 not to send those routes in
the first place because once R1 gets them, it's going to drop them anyway.
That would be pretty cool, don't you think?
Well, that's exactly what the ORF feature does. Now, for this to work, both
routers must be of a certain IOS release - which release, I don't know -
details like this I can never remember. However, assuming both routers are
of a high enough release, when the BGP peering relationship is setup, one
part includes a capabilities exchange. And, I believe that during this
cap's exchange, R1 would tell R2 about the filter it (R2) should use when
sending R1 routes.
Now, R2 won't waste bandwidth sending R1 rotes it doesn't want.
OK, so now you probably want to know how to configure this feature.
Off-hand, I can't tell you - again, I have a hard time remembering stuff
like that. However, if you look in the config guide for 12.3 under IP
configuration, you'll find a link to new features.
