Rip Summary Route & Split Horizon

I have read, or possibly imagined conflicting information on RIP Summary
routes, and Split horizon. SO i have a couple questions, thoughts,
understandings.

1. Can you run summary routes for rip under Rip V1?

2. Is the no ip split horizon required in order for a summary route to work?
Or is this just necessary on some occasions?

Any feedback would be appreciated.
