David,

Come to think of it (after much reading-up on the subject), I would leave it on when connecting 2 switches that are "PAgP aware" or off when there is specific mentioning that one end is not PAgP aware.

Never did realise that this command was there, partly due to the "always working" instances during my practices. But you had brought up an interesting topic here. Not many discussions on it but enough to hit a point.

Let me refer you to a previous posts: http://www.groupstudy.com/archives/ccielab/200311/msg00633.html.

Seems that leaving the command out will cause certain issues with etherchannel link failure although personally, I had not tested this out yet.

regards.. ron

Hi Ron,

But it's not according to what the docs are stating. Just afraid that we get penalized if "non-silent" is omitted.

Howdy David,

Seems like you've already worked out when is the command required. I for one will not want to put anything into any configs if not specifically asked for.

Subject: L2 Etherchannel configuration

Hello,

Do we need to configure "non-silent" at the end of "channel-group" command for at least one end of the PAgP etherchannel link?? I came across this in the doc CD 12.1(14):

"If you do not specify non-silent with the auto or desirable mode, silent is assumed. The silent mode is used when the switch is connected to a device that is not PAgP-capable and seldom, if ever, sends packets. A example of a silent partner is a file server or a packet analyzer that is not generating traffic. In this case, running PAgP on a physical port prevents that port from ever becoming operational; however, it allows PAgP to operate, to attach the interface to a channel group, and to use the interface for transmission. Both ends of the link cannot be set to silent. "

The last sentence is the one which got me confused as I have tried many times and it seem to work without "non-silent" configured on both ends. I guess there's no harm inserting the word in too.

Thanks
David
