If your asking a more technical question of is dialtone streamed from the
server or generated locally by the phone, then the answer is...local. The
phones must register to the CallManager server for call control. The phones
are set to use DHCP by default and figure out where to register for their
configuration via DHCP option 150. You can add this custom option in
Windows DHCP or on a router acting as a DHCP server. Option 150 should
either be an IP address or an Array with the IP address being the
CallManager server(s) that are running the TFTP process. The registration
to CallManager is done via the MAC address on the phone though. You can
access the administrative interface in CallManager via
http://IPAddress/ccmadmin. You will need to login via the administrator
password. On versions of CM previous to 4.0(1) and without Multi-Level
admin activated, this can be the local administrator of the server. If MLA
is activated then you will need to know what username and password gives you
super user access or what the password is for the CCMAdministrator user is.
You will add the phones by going to DEVICES/PHONES/ADD PHONES within the
admin interface and select the correct model number to build. Once you
build the basic device then you will be offered to put a line on the phone.
Do so for both and you should be able to call between them. There is much a
CallManager server can do in the way to complex dialplans and toll
restriction, etc but if you're just starting out, you can ignore that stuff
and make basic calls. Fill in the required items when building the phones
and leave everything else at default. If after doing this, the phones won't
register then it could be a name resolution issue. By default the phones
will be told the name of the server to register with. If DNS isn't set up
then you can go in and change the name to the IP address (SYSTEM/SERVER) and
things should start working. This is a fairly common thing to do in lab
environments. From there, crank out the manual and let the fun begin. The
documentation, while thick in volume, is pretty good.
