I've gotten SO verey many request about the flash
cards, I felt I better send a follow-up to the list.
Here's what I did. I went to the local drug store and
got several hundred real, 3.5X5" index cards. I then
went to the 12.1 (and eventually 12.2) Configuration
and Command Referrence sections on CCO. I wrote
exactly one command on each card, keeping the cards in
matching section "decks" with the Documentation
section names - so there's a deck for every routing
protocol, one for Switching services, one for QoS, one
for Security, one for Frame Relay, one for
MultiService, Security, etc. You get the idea. I
only copied down the config mode commands, and I only
wrote the one sentence description for each command.
Once I had the first couple of decks built, I would
keep them with me, each deck rubber-banded together,
and study them whenever I had a down moment. Since I
have teenage children, both of whom are athletically
inclined, I found sitting at meets and practices to be
about my best study ti9me.
The idea was to get me at least marginally familiar
with every config command available, in the context of
what section it was in on the Doc CD. This way I
could focus on what was available, and if I couldn't
remeber the exact syntax for the command, or its
related commands, or default values I could always
look it up directly, having memorized it in the "Deck"
it would be found on in the CD.
I did remove duplicates, paticularly match and set
clauses and a few of the protocol independent routing
commands. Nevertheless the task was well worth the
effort of writing the text on hardcopy cards.
In all honesty no one probably wants my cards.
Several of the decks are three years old and the wear
is apparent. I will say I found it very interesting
that when the last test revision came out, and I
pulled my IPX deck, my IGRP deck, and all my
Token-ring related cards, and then added in the new
QoS commands, the 3550 Deck, and the extra commands
that showed up in 12.2, I had increased my total by
about 50% over what the old 12.1 deck had. I did
actually go through and re-validate the 12.1 commands,
but I found only a small set that I felt compelled to
rewrite.
It helped me alot - it may work for you, or it may be
a complete waste of time. I think the determining
factor would be, Do you memorize well? If you do,
then that's what this is. Memorizing the IOS command
set.
Just my $0.02
