Distance command applied to externally learned routes -

Hi Group,

Is the distance command only capable of affecting the admin distance of
internal routes? More specifically, when using eigrp can you lower the admin
distance of an externally learned route with the distance command? I have
been trying to do this for sometime now with no success. I can manipulate the
admin distance of routes learned from eigrp neighbors; as well as any route
that is internal to the eigrp domain marked as (D).

I have configured the distance command in the following ways:

distance 109 136.1.23.3 0.0.0.0 ------ resulted in all "internal" routes
learned from 136.1.23.3 having admin of 109

distance 109 136.1.23.3 0.0.0.0 1
access-list 1 permit 30.0.0.0 0.255.255.255
access-list 1 permit 31.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 ----- this did not change the
admin distance of the specified routes. Both ACL specify externally learned
routes.

Is there a problem in my configuration or is this an eigrp thing?
