A windows 2000 pc with lot's of serial interfaces?
I use mikrotik as my ssh server and love it.
(mikrotik.com/download.html)
Plus it's free in it's basic mode. A P100 or better with two 3com cards
can do a lot.
Public IP --- Mikrotik SSH PC --- Private IP --- Dumb XYPLEX terminal
server --- Rack
The short answer is if you get a multiport serial card and get windows
or linux or mikrotik to support it. You could roll your own terminal
server.
Or you can get a used non cisco terminal server off ebay. Lot's of
people on the list including myself use xyplex terminal servers. Check
the archives for the configs and model numbers.
Here's a quick list of pc serial cards.
MOXA (www.moxa.com) Smartio C104H 4-port PCI multiport asynchronous
board
MOXA (www.moxa.com) Smartio C168H 8-port PCI multiport asynchronous
board
Cyclades (www.cyclades.com) Cyclom-Y Series PCI multiport asynchronous
(serial) cards
Cyclades (www.cyclades.com) Cyclades-Z Series PCI multiport asynchronous
(serial) cards
TCL (www.thetcl.com) DataBooster 4 or 8 port High Speed Buffered PCI
Communication Controllers
I spend a lot of time supporting sco unix dumb terminals early in my
career. I feel quite comfortable breaking a serial breakout box and
troubleshooting why isn't the RTS signal high?
I can tell you if your aren't at that level, your going to spend a lot
of time rolling your own terminal server.
Of course the cisco models you listed don't have multiple rs-232 serial
ports. You could cascade from one aux port to another console port,
etc. Check the archives.
Hope my email helps.
Michael

Subject: Makeshift Access Server
Hello, Group.
This is way out there, but does anyone know of a way to make a 2501,
2503, etc... into an access server? Maybe by using the serials or
something? I need a second server and don't have an extra 2511. This
is way out there, but you never know.
Thanks,
Danny
