Max. Number of OSPF (and EIGRP) Adjacency

I have a design questions for those of you who work or have worked in a very
large environment---what is the largest number of OSPF (or EIGRP)
adjacencies you have seen on one router ---and on what kind of hardware
platform?

We are working on a design using DMVPN, which means the hub router has to be
adjacent with all the spoke routers. We want to use as few head-end routers
as possible (economical reason) and also have a reliable network---just
wonder where the golden mean will be in this case.

I would appreciate any input you can offer.
