Jeremy,

I'd agree with your theoretical max. throughput estimation for a single
uncontested user--typically about half of the signaling rate because of the
overhead. One thing to note is access is mitigated via CSMA/CA, so jitter
sensitive performance (voice over IP and the like) really begins to drop off
at around 9 active associations. a, b or g, it doesn't matter, they all use
the same access method. This could be offset by increasing the AP density to
keep the ave. number of active associations per AP down and the greater
number of non-overlapping channels available with 802.11a helps in this
regard.

Good luck,

Subject: OT: Wireless Question

> One of our "upper management" people has suggested they would like to wipe
out the multiple 100mb switches servicing 100 users and put in 802.11a for
every user (about a 200'x200' area). Please keep in mind that this is not
for mobility purposes but for a production environment..meaning,
ftp,intranet,internet,extranet,email,vax,ibm,streaming quotes. They would
like to do this because they do not want to spend the money on a new wire
closet. Does anyone have any docs/links showing how wireless is really
designed for mobility purposes and that bandwidth would be a huge problem in
my situation. My calculations (please tell me if I'm wrong) is with 54mb
with 802.1x/wifi on, 1 user will pull about 27mb half duplex (consider the
ap to be sitting right next to you). Any ideas/comments would be
appreciated. I obviously have said no to the idea but of course they want
hard documentation to back it up. Thanks.
