Well, at some point VoIP need to connect to PSTN, or else how a call would
ever go through from IP to traditional telephony?
IP phones do not need PSTN connection to call each other, but to call
traditional phones PSTN connection is needed.
At some point in the future more and more phones will use IP telephony and
the need for PSTN connectivity will decline.
Even now, say you have a small business with 2 offices... You can set up 2
CME, one in each office and say 50 IP phones in each. Then you have 100
phones which can call each other with no traditional telephony involved.
But you still going to need a PSTN connection in at least one office so you
can place and receive public calls.
Best regards,
Alexei

Hi asadovnikov,
But if I need a PSTN line to connect into my 2620, then what's the point of
all these since I would need to pay for my PSTN line anyway, isn't it?
Why bother to set up all these to go thru the CME?
I was hoping that there will be a solution that I could just use my Cisco IP
Phone via the IP, without any need of the PSTN (normal phone line).
Cheers,
L.

You need a better router then 2620 to run latest 12.3T features but
older
software you shall be fine with, I recommend 2621XM.

Yes
your PSTN line would go right into 2620 (you need some kind of voice
card
though). I have voice PRI coming into the router, depending
upon
hardware you have PSTN connection would be different. If you have
FXO port
you can plug your home phone line into the router.

Best
