ppp authentication chap CALLBACK - ???

Does anybody know what is the purpose of this option CALLBACK?

server
ppp authent chap

client
ppp authent chap callback
OR
no ppp authent chap

The result is the same - only server sends challenges to client:
1st time when client calls server and 2nd time when server calls back.

Client doesn't authenticate server (doesn't send challenge) in both cases

Why did cisco develop this option - callback (which is not even in command
ref guide) ?
Is there any applicable usage of this option exist ?
