To all QoS gurus,

I have the following questions, and will be greatly appreciated if anyone can shed some light on this :)

Q1) For a normal environment, some data packets (e.g. FTP) will be longer / bigger than others. If I use fragmentation, does it actually makes the packet size uniform? And will this reduce the queuing delay for the packets?

Q2) For NBAR, can it match packets that are normally difficult to match with ACL?

Q3) For RSVP, I understand that it will check to see if there are enough resources for the reservation before it will accept a reservation. But will RSVP determine whether the application has the correct 'permission' to reserve the bandwidth? Or will RSVP just allow / permit it thru so long as it has enough resources?

Also, I realized that RSVP is a Resource-based CAC, which will reserve bandwidth. But will RSVP guarantee delay as well? Or is delay handled by queuing?

Q4) What is the difference of Integrated Services VS Differentiated Services?

Are my following statements true...

Integrated Services guaranteed delivery, whereas Differentiated Services provides traffic preference. Also, Integrated Services uses RSVP to signal the requested level of service, whereas Differentiated Services does not use any signaling.

And lastly,

Is it a good practice to color / marking close to the application(source)? And should I perform marking at WAN edge routers before letting packets to exit my WAN interface?

Lee
