Quick question about MD5 updates via 3550

All -- Please comment / correct the following.

It is my understanding that once you configure a VTP password (3550)
then your switch will use MD5 to secure this password during
summary-advertisement transmissions; this is automatic. Is there any
way to turn off the MD5 feature? Please advise on other types of
authentication that may be used (if any) for VTP traffic. I just want
to make sure....
