It authenticates. I thought after I sent the email that I should have included that, but since I stated that it stays connected until the idle-timeout I assumed it was implied. As practice I should make the dialer map names the same as the username/hostname, but I found that its arbitrary so ....

I didn't know about the manual call and disconnect statements (thank you), I was just initiating interesting traffic and waiting for teardown.

Well, I did what you said, start with the most basic config (i.e. removing ppp encapsulation) and it worked with hdlc. Then I changed it back to ppp and it still worked. Authentication, dialer watch, etc etc.

While I do "officially" hate isdn now. Thank you for reminding me of a principal rule: config check config check.
