There's an equivalent of a hole-in-one in medical research. Clinical trials
are usually double (or more) blind -- a patient is randomized to get the best
current therapy or the experimental therapy, but the treating physician, as
opposed to the monitoring board, doesn't know what a specific patient is
getting. The hole-in-one comes when the safety board stops the trial for the
good reason: the experimental therapy is so superior to the current gold
standard that it is unethical to withhold it from all patients in the study.
This happened in a couple of recent large studies on postmenopausal breast
cancer: tamoxifen had been a major, hole-in-one breakthrough a few years ago,
but adding aromatase inhibitors seems to double (at least) its effectiveness.
And that can be one of the joys of networking -- to come up with an out-of-the-
box solution that solves a real problem elegantly.

You mean electrocardiography? Gotta mention that was introduced by Eindthoven
around 1907 or thereabouts -- although there has been enormous refinement. The
relevance? The Dijkstra algorithm is better than 40 years old -- it was not
developed for routing -- and both the Dijkstra for intra-area link state, and
the BGP path vector paradigm, are going to need to be replaced. We don't know
yet what will replace them - this is truly at the research level (Internet
Research Task Force's Routing Research Group as opposed to the IETF).

Interesting--I find that networking and medical studies actually complement one
another. Doctors have had to work, for centuries, with systems too complex to
know their complete state -- and that's equally true of many large networks.
I actively use medical approaches in network diagnosis -- as well as using
networking to solve clinical medical problems.
