Sam,
I used to have a FORE switch in my lab until it's
image got corrupt on a reload. Marconi, who bought
Fore, no longer support the older models so you cant
get another image. Not to mention, they are not that
user friendly but I had worked on them before so I
knew how to configure them already. But, this things
may be something to think about if you go the Fore
route. As far as Nortel Centilliuns, they are fine as
long as you have the password for them. I have been
told that doing a password recovery for them is very
difficult. I currently have a 3com Corebuilder 7000.
It is a great switch and 3com still has images and
manuals on their website. I picked it up on Ebay and
was able to upgrade to the last image that was
released for it. It is menu driven and very easy to
configure. The only thing it cant do is ILMI pvc
autodiscovery but neither can the Fore or the Nortel.
I think Cisco uses some proprietary ILMI messaging for
the pvc discovery. The ILMI works fine, it just wont
discover the pvcs configured on the switch for some
reason. However, this is only one command in the IOS
to configure, so I could care less. I would however
warn you to make sure no matter what you buy that it
has the passwords.
HTH,
Chris
